Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work

Course Overview
The Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work, a Qualsafe Award, equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to respond effectively in a wide range of workplace first aid situations. The qualification follows the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) training standards and the recommendations of the Resuscitation Council (UK) and expert emergency care practitioners. Learners will develop the competence to deliver safe, prompt, and effective first aid, with a full understanding of the role and responsibilities of a workplace first aider.

Intended Audience
This course is suitable for individuals with specific responsibilities at work, or in voluntary and community roles, to provide first aid in the workplace. Typical learners include:

  • Workplace first aiders
  • Managers and supervisors with first aid duties
  • Office or site staff with designated first aid responsibilities
  • Volunteers or community workers required to provide first aid

Topics Covered
Learners will engage with both theoretical and practical content, including:

  • Assessing and managing a range of workplace first aid situations
  • CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) use
  • Recovery position and airway management
  • Managing bleeding, shock, and minor injuries
  • Recognition and management of illness and injury in the workplace
  • Understanding the role and responsibilities of a workplace first aider

Entry Requirements
Learners must be at least 14 years old on the first day of training and able to perform practical tasks at floor level. While no other formal academic requirements exist, Level 1 literacy and numeracy or equivalent is strongly recommended. Learners should wear practical clothing and flat footwear suitable for hands-on training.

Progression
Completion of this qualification may support progression to:

  • Higher-level first aid qualifications, including advanced workplace or emergency care awards
  • Career development in health, safety, and emergency response roles

Requalification Requirements
This Qualsafe Award is valid for 3 years. Learners must retake the qualification before the certificate expiry date to remain qualified. Requalification may be completed via a 12-hour FAW requalification course if the learner holds a current or recently expired FAW certificate. Certificates expired by more than one month may require attending the full 18-hour initial course.
